What to Expect for the 2026 Hurricane Season 

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1, and early forecasts suggest it may be a bit quieter than average thanks to El Niño. This weather pattern can create stronger winds in the upper atmosphere, which often helps break up storms before they fully develop. 

Forecasters at Colorado State University are predicting around 13 tropical storms and 6 hurricanes this year. 

That said, it only takes one storm to make an impact. Experts continue to remind us that even quieter seasons can still bring powerful storms. That is something Florida has seen time and time again. 

There’s also a layer of uncertainty this year, as unusually warm ocean temperatures could fuel storm development. The takeaway? A slightly calmer season is possible, but it’s still important to stay prepared. 

Simple Ways to Prepare (Without the Stress) 

Hurricane prep doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Focus on the essentials first: 

• Stock up on medications, pet supplies, and non-perishable food 
• Have water, batteries, flashlights, and backup chargers ready 
• Don’t forget a few comfort items to make power outages easier (this makes a bigger difference than you’d think!)
